IT’S OUR BIGGEST FACADE TRANSFORMATION YET!
Transforming the facade of a home is not only key for achieving the all-important street appeal but it also sets the scene for what’s to come inside. So, making an old girl as pretty on the outside as in is always a priority in our renovations.
Although Erin’s house had great bones, the brick exterior with terracotta roof was giving 1990s suburbia, rather than the Urban Farmhouse of her dreams. Could this be our biggest facade transformation yet? Take a look and let us know what you think!
Here’s what we did…
CHANGED UP ALL THE MATERIALS
That’s right… the whole shebang! Well, we kept a bit of brick for prosperity but other than that, it all got an overhaul. New roof, new cladding, new paint - the lot!
Roof
Without a doubt, the biggest part of this epic facade transformation is the addition of the new roof. This house has A LOT of roof and because it’s positioned slightly lower than the road, you can see almost every inch of it.
So, it was goodbye terracotta tiles and hello Lysaght Snapseam steel roofing. The minute we first set eyes on these wide and chunky 340mm steel panels we knew they’d be perfect to achieve the country barn-like roof our vision board commanded. Snapseam is ideal for a roof like this because the individual panels offer greater flexibility for longer lengths and greater spanning capacity thanks to its clever concealed fix clips. Our tradies loved it too because it’s easy to install and comes pre-painted in the Colorbond colour of your choice. We chose Basalt, a beautiful deep cool grey.
EXTERIOR WALLS
For the exterior walls, we painted some sections of the original brick and used Hardie Oblique cladding and Artisan Exterior Calcario stone walling to create beautiful texture and interest.
Horizontal weatherboards will forever have a place in our hearts but for this home, the Hardie Oblique cladding, installed vertically, sings to the Urban Farmhouse aesthetic. And it looks fabulous alongside the existing brick, which we painted the same colour.
Inspired by traditional sandstone buildings, Calcario is a beautifully textural and timeless limestone walling that adds another layer of dimension to the exterior.
WINDOWS
Black window frames were a non-negotiable for our vision and Stegbar’s Alumiere windows were absolutely perfect. They’re commercial-grade aluminium so they’re smooth opening, low maintenance and come in a huge range of configurations so you can customise the size, style and colour to suit your space.
COLOUR
Dulux Grey Port was the perfect paint partner for the Basalt roof and black window frames. We used it on both the Hardie Oblique cladding and the brick for a seamless look.
MOVED THE FRONT DOOR
The position of the old front door was throwing the facade off balance so we moved the entrance further away from the garages to visually correct it. At the same time, we increased the height of the entryway and added a new, higher portico to let more light into the foyer.
Now, when you enter through the gorgeous statement double doors (with side lites for extra width and lots of light) you get a glorious view through the house and out to the greenery on the other side. The doors and side lites are from Corinthian Doors and are painted in Dulux Buff It, the same soft, warm neutral shade we used for the doors and trims internally.
CREATED A NEW PORTICO AND GABLE
One of the hallmarks of a farmhouse is the distinctive gabled roofs. Erin’s house already had two smaller gables but adding the new central gable on the portico changes the entire front of Erin’s home. It gives the house the dimension that was lacking and is essential to nail the Urban Farmhouse look.
You’d be forgiven for thinking the herringbone pavers at the front door have been there forever because they have a beautiful old-worldly charm about them, but they’re a new addition to Erin’s entry. Like the stone walling on the pillars, these Kahvi cobbles from Artisan Exterior are a stunning limestone that adds character to the entryway.
