7 SMALL SPACE STYLING TIPS

Would you love to come home to a beautifully styled home, but feel as though nothing quite flows or reflects your true personal style? We’ve heard so many people say “but I’ve only got a small apartment” or “but I’m only renting” - well, guess what? That doesn’t matter! The same elements and principles of styling apply whether your house is a mansion or motorhome and you deserve to be greeted by an amazing feeling, the moment you walk through the door. Check out Monika Reber’s Swiss apartment for proof!

We have so many tips to share for small home styling. Here are just a few to get you started:

Styling a small home? Try these tips:

1) Multipurpose pieces - when you’re shopping for furniture, look for pieces that can do double duty. That might be an ottoman that doubles as a coffee table, stools that double as side tables or even a built-in bench seat. When you’re styling a small space, less furniture is more.

2) Bigger isn’t always better - and that’s especially true when it comes to couches! Avoid buying the biggest couch you can possibly fit in your room. Not only will it make it hard to move around the space, but it’ll also make the room look smaller, not bigger. You can always add side tables to make a couch look larger but you can’t shrink one that’s too big!

3) Perfect the proportions - in the same way that you don’t want your couch to be too big, you’ll need to be aware of the scale of other furniture items in the room too. Make sure you measure the space to ensure you get the proportions right before making expensive purchases you might later regret. Marking out furniture with tape on the floor is always a good idea!

While we love a nest of coffee tables in a large room, it’s likely that a single, smaller table will be much better suited to a small room.

4) Show some leg - the legs of your sofa that is! Choosing a sofa with visible legs helps create the illusion of a bigger room because you can actually see the floor continuing underneath it. Similarly, a sofa with slimmer arms will also feel less bulky in a smaller room.

5) Don’t be square - If you’re styling a dining room, try a round table. They work well in small (especially square) rooms as they usually take up less space. The bonus is, there’s no bad seat at a round table!

6) Go a la cart(e) - bar carts aren’t just to store booze but can be a space-saving way to create a whole different zone in a room - perfect when you’re short on space! Style your cart with lush green plants, stacks of books and your favourite beverage for a fun, versatile look.

7) Those small space smells - the smaller the room, the easier it is to make it smell amazing and that’s a win! Don’t forget to include some fresh eucalyptus leaves in a vase or scented candles when you’re styling to make the smell the first thing you notice about the space, not the size.
