5 OF OUR FAVE SPACES THAT MAKE ROLLING SEAS A WINNER
As soon as we set eyes on this home we knew that we were on to a winner… and we’re not talking about the owner, 3 x World Champion surfer, Mick Fanning! Set in prime position, beachfront at Bilinga, just north of Coolangatta and south of Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast, this 3-storey property is an absolute winner in its own right.
Built by Mick back in 2014, the aptly named Rolling Seas is a stunning coastal-style property. As you’d expect, there are plenty of white walls and white-washed floorboards but totally unexpected (but very beautiful) is the inclusion of many reclaimed materials used throughout the property - mis-matched timber doors, exposed beams, an intricately detailed wrought iron balustrade and recycled bricks, to name a few. From the swimming pool on the middle level entertaining decks, there are views from Snapper Rocks to Stradbroke Island. It really is one of a kind!
The thing that made this project so different for us was the fact that the house was already beautifully renovated. Our brief was simple - to go to town with all the furnishings and styling required to turn this family home into a holiday home. In a property of this size, the main challenge was working out the purpose of each space to ensure the right ratio of living, dining and sleeping spaces to create the ultimate holiday home experience for up to 20 guests.
Check out these 5 fab spaces that we think make Rolling Seas a winner.
1) TROPHY ROOM TURNED ROOM FOR ALL
Formerly Mick’s trophy room (yes, he needs a whole room to fit them all!), the multipurpose room is one of the few spaces at Rolling Seas that we actually renovated. Mick and Bree wanted to create a bedroom/lounge room combo and we jumped at the idea. If you love getting a few families together for a weekend away you’ll know there’s nothing better than a room with lots of beds for the kids to play and sleep. It was definitely must-have for a fabulous property like this!
Our vision was to create a room which seamlessly turned from playroom in the day to bedroom at night. We built-in three double beds, two of which are in separate nooks with their own curtains to pull at night (our fave Luxaflex linen sheers). We used super comfy Eva mattresses (complete with the matching snuggly Eva hemp linen sheets and memory foam pillows) which make the perfect day beds to lounge and watch TV on, then simply pull back the bedding for six salty sleepy heads to snooze at night.
2) FRONT ROW TIX TO THE SURF SHOW
With arguably the best view in the house, the main bedroom commands an uninterrupted vista of white sands and blue ocean. The four-poster bed originally sat in the centre of the room and there was much discussion about whether we should keep or tweak this layout. Bon took one for the team and tested the best bed position by sleeping a night with the bed in each position #truestory
Her verdict was that with the bed head against the wall, she could see the sea to the side and the impressive length of the beach out the side balcony doors without lifting her head off the plush pillows, hence the current bed position. And the bonus is that with the bed in this position there’s space for seating, which turns the room into a retreat rather than just a bedroom. The boucle sofa and chair from Lounge Lovers bring texture into the room and the gorgeous creamy shade adds warmth to the cool white palette.
We added soft rugs, a dreamy over-sized armchair from Oz Design and luxe furnishings like the beautiful Lounge Lovers bone inlay drawers to make this adults’ retreat feel extra special.
3) CELLAR-BRATIONS
A wine cellar probably isn’t top of the list of rooms you’d expect to find at a holiday rental property, but believe us, it’s the bonus room you never knew you wanted! Wine aficionado or not, the reclaimed brick-lined cellar is a fabulous addition to your beachside holiday.
In contrast to the light and airy feeling of the rest of the house, the wine cellar is masculine and moody. Just off the dining room, it’s the go-to spot for post-dinner digestifs or just to sit with a book in one of the James Lane armchairs when you’ve had enough sun, surf and sand for the day.
4) GOLD CLASS ON THE GOLD COAST
With the biggest TV we’ve ever seen and amazing acoustics already in-situ, Mick’s media room was his pride and joy… and who were we to change that?! All it needed was a mega-sized sofa and some styling to finish it off.
The Loft sofa from Oz Design is the perfect chunky piece with (removable! 🙏🏻) linen covers. Its modular design meant we could create a giant U-shape to get plenty of bums on seats for movie nights.
Whether it’s ping pong or pilates that tickles your fancy, you’re catered for at Rolling Seas.
In the games room, we refurbed the existing green ping pong table to look like a piece of furniture in the games room and centred it on a rug to define the zone.
Fun fact - we had our painter colour match the ping pong table to the artwork to ensure an exact match.
Check out the checkerboard patterns - that’s no coincidence! We chose this fun rug from Miss Amara because its playful connection to the game Checkers (or draughts) and then found the perfect matching artwork from Sunday Society that features the same pattern.
There’s a kitchenette in the corner for beers and snacks and a seating area to catch your breath between sets.
Just off the games room is the wellness room and it doesn’t get much more zen than this. Mick and Bree’s infrared sauna is in one corner, there’s room for a pilates, yoga or body weights sesh in the middle and an armchair with a cute McMullin & Co side table to pop your coffee or kombucha on post workout. Gorgeous Luxaflex whimsy linen curtains and warm white walls (it’s Dulux Hog Bristle) bring all the dreamy day spa vibes.
