HOW BONNIE RESTYLED DODGE'S ROOM WITH COTTON ON KIDS LIFE

So often we see posts in our Facebook groups along the lines of “Help! My 8 year old wants to design his own room but it doesn’t fit my vision board!” Or “Help! My daughter wants a <insert cartoon character here> bedspread like her friend!” Sound familiar?

We’re all for kids expressing their creativity (we have 9 of them between us and believe us, we’ve been through this too!) but we truly feel it’s possible to create playful kids’ rooms that adults will love too. And we haven’t yet met a kid who’s been devastated by a room we’ve styled for them.

The youngest of Bon’s four boys, little Dodge, started school this year and with this came the rite of passage to have his room updated to a “big boy bedroom”. Bon got busy restyling his room with lots of products from the fun new Cotton On Kids Life range.

Bye bye baby bunk beds…

Hello big boy bedroom!

LET’S START AT THE VERY BEGINNING…

We start styling kids’ rooms like we do any other room in the house… with the feels. We think about how we, and our kids, want to feel in that space. For kids’ rooms, we aim to inject a sense of fun and creativity with a few quirky elements that make it inspiring and a space that the child will love to spend time in. Your vision board will set the tone for the whole room.

In Dodge’s room, Bonnie started by swapping out his little bunks for a queen-sized bed that fits the room perfectly and is great for sleepovers without the hassle of making up a trundle bed. Finding kids’ bed linen in queen size is often a challenge but the Cotton on Kids Life bedding range comes in single, double and queen sizes, making it super versatile.

must-haves for little people’s rooms

Lots of storage!

Do anyone else’s kids seem to have so much stuff?! Between weekend clothes and uniforms, toys, bags and hats there’s a lot to store. In kids’ rooms, we like to incorporate lots of different storage types to make sure everything has a place. Cute baskets look good and are practical for throwing toys, shoes and even clothes in. Wall hooks can double as a place to hang artwork or a super-easy spot for kids to hang up their caps and jackets too.

Multipurpose furniture

Especially in smaller bedrooms, furniture that doubles as storage is an absolute bonus. Pieces like bench seats with storage inside, beds with drawers in the base and using shelves instead of bedside tables are all excellent ways of maximising storage while minimising clutter.

Decorative pillows

We never style beds without decorative cushions and kids’ beds are no different! They're a great way to add colour and fun to the room.

A double-sided doona cover

We’re digging the doona covers from the Cotton On Kids Life range that all have different prints on each side. Flip them over weekly for a fresh new look!
