EVERYONE LOVES A LAUNDRY! 5 FEATURES THAT MAKE THIS ONE A WINNER

Everyone loves a laundry… when we post photos of room transformations that is. When it comes to actually DOING the laundry well, that’s a different story!

Erin’s always said there’s no middle ground - you’re either a laundry person or you’re not. She’s a self-proclaimed laundry person, the type who doesn’t mind spending time washing and folding, so designing the laundry in her own home renovation was a pretty big deal.

With three very active kids (and husband) the laundry is always a busy room so her dream laundry needed to be practical with lots of light and a feel-good factor.

These 5 features make this room a winner for Erin…

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Gone are the days when laundries were banished to the darkest corner of the house. In a busy modern home, it makes sense to have the laundry easily accessible so it’s quick and easy to churn through loads of washing between working from home, making meals or watching episodes of whatever show you’re currently binging. With this in mind, we claimed the space of the fifth and barely used bedroom (or the dungeon, as Bonnie referred to it!) and transformed it into a beautiful space that Erin will love to be in.

Just off the main living space, the laundry is hidden behind a beautiful barn door that adds a feature to the outside of the room while putting some ‘farmhouse’ in the Urban Farmhouse aesthetic.

LOTS OF LIGHT

Previously, this room was pretty dark and unwelcoming so adding light was the first priority. The new windows and door to the outside let the light flood into the room and can also be opened for natural ventilation which is super important in a wet space.

Goodbye dungeon, hello light and bright laundry!

OUTDOOR ACCESS

Wherever possible, we love to create direct access from a laundry to the outdoors. An easily accessible clothesline beats trekking through the house with baskets of wet washing. We built a deck outside the new laundry door that enhanced the flow of the floor plan by providing access to both the washing line and the rubbish bins around the side of the house.

STONE-INSPIRED SURFACES

Keeping with our Urban Farmhouse vision, the floors and benchtops have a beautiful textured stone look for warmth and character.

The floor tiles bring the best of both worlds to Erin’s laundry - the feeling of old worldly charm with the practicality of porcelain so they’re easy to clean and maintain. To create this look, we used Tile Cloud’s Arrawarra Cream Calacatta Look tiles for the large and Dunmore Charcoal Stone Look Squares for the cute diamond detail.

For the benchtops, we used the same stone as in the kitchen, Arabescato Borghini by Talostone. Its elegant marble veining looks super luxe.

ELEVATED APPLIANCES

We couldn’t have picked a better pair of appliances for this home than the Haier Washer & Dryer in black to complement the pops of black throughout. In the laundry, they complement the black handles, window and door frames, hanging rail and taps for a chic urban look.

Elevating the appliances within the cabinetry was a must for Erin. Not only does it save bending over but it makes space for washing baskets and pullout shelves underneath to make loading and unloading the machines a breeze.
