HELP! THE FRONT OF MY HOME IS A DISASTER!

We receive emails with subjects like this ALL.THE.TIME. In fact, we received this email with that exact subject, from Ana, sharing her nightmare with her new build:

Our response to Ana? The very same thing we say to anyone who is stumped by how to fix an ugly-looking home: “We gotcha, babe! You need a vision board!”

Knowing where to start can be overwhelming, we get it. We learnt everything we know about building and renovating on the job and made all the mistakes so that you don’t have to!

We teach our students to start with a vision board because seeing is believing! Visually creating a collage of what your dream home will look like and then adding words to describe how it will feel is the most powerful way to set your vision in stone and to share it with any other stakeholders on the project. You’re going to want to show it to your architect, your tradies… and probably your other half, to get them on board the same train for your reno journey.

Here’s how we create our vision boards…

5 QUICK STEPS TO CREATING A VISION BOARD

First, decide if you prefer an old-school vision board (like a corkboard), or a new-school digital one. Whichever medium works best for you is fine. The most important thing is that you can look at it frequently and easily. For what it’s worth, we love using a combo of Pinterest and Instagram to screenshot pics we love. Canva is a great tool for collecting images together on one page.

If you’re renovating or building an entire home, start with a vision board that encompasses the interior and exterior. If, like Ana, you’re just fixing one part of you home (in her case the facade) you can create a board that focuses just on this space:

Ready? Let’s get going…

1. Write your reno vision in 3-5 words.
For example: ‘modern Mediterranean villa’

2. Write how you want to feel using a few words
For example: “I want to feel like I’m on holiday every day”

3. Come up with a hashtag for your reno vision
For example: #santoriniinsydney

4. Identify no more than 10 of your favourite inspo shots and check that the pics match the words in steps 1-3. Do they look like the style you are trying to achieve?

5. Pin the words and pics on your vision board (remember this can be digital or a corkboard or a scrapbook). Whatever floats your boat.

And there you have it, your very own vision board!

Vision boarding is the very first thing we teach in our online course, Three Birds Reno School. Once you have this tangible visual nailed, you’re ready to jump head-first into the renovation process and we’ll teach you that, step by step, in Reno School.
