5 FEATURES TO STEAL FOR YOUR TEENS' BEDROOMS
Creating bedrooms for teenagers is all about striking the perfect balance between style and practicality. We love using bold colours, stylish furniture and clever storage solutions to make teens’ bedrooms feel like a sanctuary where they can unwind, hit the books, and catch their much-needed zzzzzz’s.
In Erin's home, designing the bedrooms for her three teenage kids was an exciting challenge to blend fun with function, ensuring the spaces will evolve with them through their teenage years. There's truly nothing more heartwarming than witnessing the delight on their faces when they set eyes on their transformed spaces for the first time! STORAGE GALORE
Let's face it, most teenagers come with a lot of stuff. As well as built-in robes wherever possible, we try to incorporate clever storage solutions throughout their bedrooms. In Erin’s kids’ rooms, we chose beds with drawers in the base, built-in desks that can double as dressing tables for the girls and bench seats with storage that make excellent use of otherwise dead spaces.
16-year-old Eddy’s room has a built-in desk and a window seat which makes good use of the existing nook under the window.
18-year-old Mia has two built-in bench seats in her bedroom, one with drawers underneath for additional storage.
As the youngest of Erin’s children, 13-year-old Marli has plenty of years of study ahead of her and plenty of space to store her books in her built-in desk.
BOLD COLOURS
Bedrooms are a great place to add some colour in your home. For a bold, masculine vibe in Erin’s son’s room, we used Intrim timber moulding to create batten detailing on the ceiling and behind the desk wall. Painted it in the most delicious shade, Dulux Blue Metal, it brings depth and dimension to the room. You might recognise this colour from the boys’ bedroom at House 13 but despite sampling many other blues, Bonnie kept coming back to this shade. Sometimes when you’re on to a good thing it pays to stick to it!
LOVELY LIGHTING
As with any room in the house, good lighting is key. You’ll need to let your sparky know where you want lights and fans early on in your renovation to make sure you get your electrical plan just right.
In Erin’s kids’ rooms, we combined downlights with wall sconces and a cosy bedside lamp in Eddy’s room for a warm, inviting glow.
Plenty of natural light is always a bonus, with blackout curtains or blinds a must for teens who like to sleep in.
PLUSH CARPET
Carpeting in the bedrooms was a must for Erin in her home. It’s nice and cosy underfoot, especially appreciated in the morning or during colder months and it absorbs sound, making bedrooms quieter and more peaceful, which is ideal for relaxation and sleep.
The kids’ bedrooms are carpeted in the same beautiful Bouclé from EC Carpets that we used throughout the top level of the home. The soft texture and creamy colour (it’s called Ovie) perfectly complement the furnishings we chose for each bedroom.
ENSUITE BATHROOM
We know an ensuite is not a standard inclusion in a kid’s bedroom, nor was it planned at Erin’s place! But, lucky for 18-year-old Mia, this room had an existing study nook which was just asking for it to be added and now we’ve all got ensuite envy!
We’re not sure what we love the most - the double-drawer vanity paired with the above counter basin and black tapware (all from Reece), the stunning diamond wall tiles or the view from the window in the shower. Whatever it is, we do know that Mia’s a very lucky girl getting this beautiful bathroom all to herself. And she agrees.
