AMAZING GRACE PROVES RENO SCHOOL ISN’T JUST FOR BEGINNERS!

At Three Birds, we’re all about women empowering women to turn their home improvement dreams into reality. So, when one of our Reno School students does just that, we can’t help but shout it from the rooftops! Meet Grace Lee from Toowoomba, Queensland, who built the most stunning family home, incorporating the lessons and inspiration she gained from Reno School.

GRACE’S BEAUTIFUL PROJECT: ALFORD HOUSE

We’re often asked if Three Birds Reno School is only for first-time renovators, but the truth is, there’s always something new to learn - whether it’s a fresh take on design or a smarter way to approach a build. And Grace is the perfect example of that!

Alford House wasn’t Grace’s first renovation, but she joined Reno School to elevate her knowledge and ensure her latest project went off without a hitch. That’s what we love about Reno School: whether you’re a complete reno rookie or a seasoned pro, there’s always something new to learn, ideas to explore, and a community of support to lean on.

I signed up to the Reno School over four years ago because I was so inspired by what the girls create, and I love their style. I wanted to know as much as I could about the reno/build process because it’s something I feel a big passion for, and I wanted to have the most seamless experience possible.

Let’s take a look inside Grace’s knockdown rebuild project, bursting with design inspiration and valuable lessons learned along the way. Just don’t ask her to pick her favourite feature - it’s like asking her to choose a favourite child!

FROM RENOVATION TO REBUILD

In 2020, Grace and her family purchased an investment property with plans to flip it and add an extension. But, as with many renovation stories, plans changed. After talking with their builder and architect, Grace’s team decided to go for a full knockdown rebuild instead.

“We really took our time to design this house to make sure it ticked all our boxes, from functionality to design,” Grace explained. "Overall, my design choices embody a celebration of light, space and natural beauty, resulting in a home that feels both timeless and contemporary, perfectly reflecting my personal style and values."

My house build was driven by a desire for a harmonious blend of elegance and warmth, inspired by both timeless architectural elements and modern design.
— Grace Lee

The result? A breathtaking, contemporary home with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a powder room, all perfectly reflecting Grace’s style and vision.

A HOME FULL OF ‘WOW’ MOMENTS

Grace’s passion for curves and arches is evident, and her attention to detail shines through every inch of her home - from the solid arched timber front door to the Venetian render in the main ensuite. It’s nearly impossible to pick a favourite space!

“It’s really hard to pick a favourite room as I had so many non-negotiable aspects I wanted to add to the house. From the arched feature window to the American oak custom timber cabinetry in the kitchen, the outdoor cabana, and the arched fireplace… I just couldn’t pick a favourite as I feel like I’ve added so many wow factors into each room.”

This home isn’t just about good looks - it’s built with functional family living in mind, with each space thoughtfully designed to meet the demands of daily life.

A COMMUNITY LIKE NO OTHER

One of the most valuable lessons Grace took from Reno School was the importance of having a clear vision from the outset. “I can be quite an indecisive person, so this made the selection process so much easier. I knew exactly what I wanted.” She emphasised the power of vision boards, a tool taught early on in the course, which helped her stick to her vision throughout the build. “I reflected on my boards daily to make sure I was staying true to my original concept.”

When asked what she loved most about the course, Grace didn't hesitate: "Honestly, the Facebook group is priceless. To be a part of a community that has loads of knowledge and advice is worth joining for that alone."

Grace frequently turned to her fellow Reno School members for advice, inspiration, and reassurance throughout her project. This sense of community is what truly sets the Reno School apart - students supporting one another every step of the way.

We asked Grace if she would recommend the Reno School to her friends and family - a true test of its value! Her response says it all: “1000%. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience.”
