Franqui Black signed up to Reno School while she and her hubby were staying with friends and waiting for the settlement on this house, which would become their second renovation.

After two years of hard slog, Reno Schooler Franqui Black shared her gorgeous project, located in Buderim, Queensland, just before it was scooped up by a lucky buyer.

We asked Franqui all about her project… and how Reno School helped her to achieve the beautiful end result.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS HOME TO RENOVATE?

We chose this property mainly due to the location (a large flat block on top of Buderim). The house itself, although ugly, was appealing to us for a few reasons - it had solid bones, access for my husband’s machinery for landscaping and pool build (he is in earthmoving and this is where we have found we can add a lot of value in renovations) and it had a large 4 car garage downstairs with full height (2.5m) ceilings to convert into living space.

My husband and I lived in the house during the entire renovation which took us 2 years. We both work full-time so every weekend was spent on the house. We worked in stages and room by room so we always had a kitchen and bathroom to use.

WHAT WAS YOUR VISION?

Our vision was to create an entertainer’s home that brings the outside in. Something that felt open, bright, relaxing and connected.

We had a building designer complete the structural design for us. The existing house was extremely dark and gloomy so the major challenge with this extension design was to bring light into a two-storey square home.
