THE ART GALLERY OF ROLLING SEAS

Looking for some art inspo? Take a tour of the artwork we chose for Rolling Seas. Every piece was carefully chosen to bring our vision board to life and to help create rooms with balance and harmony. You’ll notice how we’ve used repetition of style and colour #samesamebutdifferent to achieve consistency throughout the main house and cottage … all the while complementing the main artwork, the breathtaking coastal view.

Take your time, soak it all in ... and you might even spot a piece that's perfect for your project.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The entry foyer area on each floor was our chance to make a first impression of that level of the house. We’ve always said that the top of the stairs is one of the best places to locate your best artwork. It sets the tone for the whole level.

When choosing wall art, it’s important to think about the colours in your art - do you want them to complement or contrast the rest of the room? Do you want your artwork to blend in or pop? We did both!

In the ground floor entry hall, we used a gorgeous over-sized mirror that Mick and Bree already owned as the feature artwork. Remember mirrors, wall sconces, juju hats, heck even real hats (we used them too!) can be considered wall art.

For the first level foyer, in striking contrast to the rest of the home, we chose two stunning black and white photographs from Olive et Oriel to create a sophisticated moment.

At the top of the stairs on the second floor, we couldn’t go past a print from one of our faves, Jai Vasicek.

IN THE ART OF THE HOME

Art is an opportunity to add interest and diversity to a space, so while you should never ignore your vision board, you can use it to create a contradiction and introduce a little quirkiness. This can totally work as long as the colours tie in with your overall colour scheme for that room.

In the heart of the home, the living spaces at Rolling Seas, rather than selecting somewhat cliched ‘coastal’ artwork and sticking strictly to our earthy colour palette, we had some fun - red lycra anyone?! See how the ocean in the print ties in with the coastal vibes really well. So it works!

GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT

If you’re choosing wall art for you own home, your personal taste is definitely a consideration, but it’s not the only consideration. Honestly, getting the colour right is more important than personal taste.

In the kitchen at Rolling Seas, we based the entire colour palette for styling around two Vynka Hallam prints. The green background was the starting point for our colour selection and we carried it through the glassware and crockery.

And remember, wall art doesn’t have to be a print or a painting. We hung a shopping bag (not your average Woolies bag, mind you!) in the butler’s pantry which works as a piece of art but brings a different interest and texture than your average canvas or framed print.

BEDROOM BEAUTIES

Colour is the fundamental element you need to get right when choosing art so, with all the rust and rattan tones in the bedrooms, it made sense that the art complemented these for a harmonious night’s sleep.

PLAYFUL PRINTS

If you can find a piece of art that has the perfect colours and a lovely nod to the room you’re creating, you’re onto a winner! We wanted a playful vibe for the games room at Rolling Seas and while we usually lean towards larger, single pieces because there are fewer decisions to make and they can make a whopping impact, we found the perfect pair of prints from Sunday Society to be the focal point in this room. Pairs of prints usually bring some fun and personality to the space. The two pieces don’t necessarily need to be the same size, like we’ve done here, but they do need to look like they belong together in terms of their colour tones.

We love how the checkerboard pattern in the print reminded us of the game ‘Checkers’ and repeated this pattern in the rug.

And yep, that’s Mick Fanning’s own surfboard propped up next to the prints and that’s part of the wall art too. We’ve used surfboards in our styling before but never one owned by a 3x World Champion surfer - that’s a first!

WHERE CAN I BUY ART?

Art has never been more accessible! You don’t have to go to a gallery or spend a fortune to get gorgeous pieces for your home. We love original artwork and often use Australian artists in our projects but the reality is, we’d blow our budgets if we didn’t mix them up with some affordable prints.
