THE GREAT ESCAPE

So, you know we love a Great Room in a family home but don’t underestimate the importance of creating a Great Escape too!

Reno School Top Tip: Create Escapes

With the proliferation of open-plan living areas there often needs to be a secondary space where family members can retreat from the main hustle and bustle of the home. Have a think about how you can create these quieter places in your home and whether or not they’re for everyone in the family or specifically for the parents or kids.

great escape: the media room

Tucked away on the top floor of our Three Birds Dream Home, we created a secondary space where family members can retreat, away from the action of the open-plan Great Room below. It’s a gorgeous space with a view of the backyard and a wall of French doors and windows to make it feel extra special. This room could be used as a home office or library but for Candice’s family of five, it’s a Media Room.

When it came to styling this space, our vision board said ‘cosy, calm and comfy’ - all the things you’d want when you escape from the rest of the house. These were our must-have styling items to bring it to life…

a big comfy sofa

With entertainment being the name of the game in this room, a big comfy sofa was at the top of our list of furniture. The Freedom Amberley sofa's seamless profile features generous seating space for ultimate comfort whether watching a movie or building a fortress in Minecraft. The Amberley (which gets bonus points for being designed and made in Australia!) comes with its own scatter cushions and we added even more cushions from Freedom and Clo Studios to turn up the comfort level up to max.

a plush cosy rug

We used the same textured loop pile carpet as the bedrooms (it’s called Quinn Street, in the colour ‘Summerford’ from EC Carpets) in this room but wanted this room to feel super cosy so added a rug as well. It doesn’t get much plusher than this Wool Shag beauty from Miss Amara.

A big screen tv

This whopping 75 inch LG Nanocell TV with enhanced HDR for amazing depth and contrast, plus a cinematic mode that makes home viewing feel like you’re in your very own cinema.

a feature pendant light

When the kids aren’t binging their fave TV series, we can see Candice reclining on this sofa, lights dimmed, with the ceiling pendant perfectly positioned for reading.

AN ELEGANT BUT PRACTICAL COFFEE TABLE

Let’s be honest, it might end up as a dumping ground for TV remotes and gaming controllers but it’s a good looking dumping ground! The marble table is as practical as it is elegant and matches the marble plinth side table.
