HOW WE REINVENTED THE HUMBLE GARDEN SHED
First came the Man Cave, then the Teenagers’ Retreat, followed more recently by the She Shed… and now we’ve added even more va-va-woom to your average garden shed to bring you… the Spritz Shed! Whatever you like to call it, when it comes to sprucing up your backyard, don’t forget the humble garden shed. It really is the tiny room that keeps on giving.
If you’re a social animal who likes to entertain at home, a Spritz Shed might be just what you’re missing in your life! Who needs a place to store your whipper snipper when you could have your own cocktail bar in your backyard? #yesplease
FROM HUMBLE TO HELL-YEAH!
The decent sized shed was a great surprise we found hidden at the back of this little cottage. It was big enough to add a party at the front and keep the business in the back (AKA storage, for those non-party/actual garden items).
So, we put a wall down the middle to divide the practical from pretty and got to work…
STEP IN TO THE SALOON
Howdy, partner! Bonnie just couldn’t resist these double-swing, saloon-style doors to make an impressive entrance to this little shed. They add a fun, quirky feel to the bar space and, because they’re under cover, they don’t need to be watertight.
Then, we added these essentials for a super spesh Spritz Shed:
The bar - we chose pretty pinks and warm tones to create the cutest little bar you ever did see. Between the cupboards and bar shelf there’s enough storage for bottles and glasses and we popped an extra bar cabinet on the opposite wall, for “looks hot” factor.
A bar fridge - with a dedicated bar fridge you can keep your Champers chilled at all times - who knows when those unexpected guests might pop in. #poppingbottlesbaby
Servery windows - alongside the saloon doors are gorgeous double-hung windows which open up to the BBQ area for when the girls are entertaining. They’re perfect for passing out the cocktails and keeping the conversation flowing between inside and out.
SIT BACK IN THE BBQ AREA
We love creating inclusive entertaining areas where the BBQ chef and chief mixologist are right in the action with the guests, rather than being stuck away from the fun by themselves. The key things to include to achieve this are:
A built-in BBQ: You’ll be showing your age if you can remember them from the first time ‘round. Breeze blocks were hip back in the 1950s and 60s and we love that this Palm Springs, holiday resort vibe is making its way back into suburban backyards again too. So much so that we used breeze blocks to create our BBQ area. We’ve already been asked lots of questions about how we made it so, we’ve listed all the materials here, for you to replicate at home.
Bar seating: the bar stools are perfectly positioned to perch between the bar and BBQ. Just fling up the double-hung windows, grab a bevvy and you’re good to go.
Covered area: this polycarbonate-covered pergola is a gem for many reasons. It provides 99.9% UV protection and keep out the elements whilst letting the light in, which makes this space usable most of the year round in sunny Sydney.
What we love most about the humble garden shed is that it’s ripe for renovation… of any kind. If a bar’s not your thing, worry not! Perhaps yoga’s your jam? Then you could create a wee exercise studio or a creative space with an easel and paints… the only limit is your imagination!
